was born in Ciudad Bolívar (Venezuela) in 1923. After his studies (1942-1947) he directed the Art School in Maracaibo. He is considered a pioneer of the Op-Art movement in Latin America and was one of its most important exponents as well as of kinetic art since the 1960s. Influenced by Piet Mondrian's later works Soto was searching for forms that seemed to be moving optically. He gained international recognition with his interactive sculptures that obtain their full meaning only in contact with the viewer.
From 1950 on he lived and worked in Paris and Caracas. His art was and still is internationally present in numerous exhibitions and collections such as the Guggenheim Collection (New York), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and the museums for modern art in Los Angeles, Dublin, Teheran and Madrid. Soto's hometown dedicated a museum to his life and work. He died in Paris on January 14th 2005.
