Roberto Matta
The painter Roberto Sebastian Echaurren Matta was born in Santiago de Chile in 1911. He finished studies in architecture in 1931, went to Paris in 1933 and from 1935 on spent two years in the studio of Le Corbusier. In 1936 he got acquainted with the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who exposed him to Salvador Dalì and the surrealists. Exhibitions with surrealistic drawings and paintings followed soon.
In 1939 Matta moved to New York, where he had his first individual exhibition in 1940 in the Gallery Julien Levy. He made friends with artists such as Gorky, Motherwell, Pollock and Baziotes and was the one to encourage them to experiments with the "Technique Automatique".
After his return to Europe in 1948 he first settled in Rome before he returned to Paris where he worked and lived by the time of his dead in 2002. Roberto Matta was awarded with numerous international prizes and honoured in many exhibitions throughout the world.
