OTMAR ALT
till February 28th, 2007

Otmar Alt is one of the most successful German contemporary artists. He has always been an individualist in art and particularly in its presentation. Always open for new projects that move art out of the "sacred halls" right into the centerfield of life. Designing telephone cards, cars, T-Shirts, umbrellas or toys, Otmar Alt appears open-minded. He is constantly experimenting with new materials and techniques. So next to his paintings sculptures made of ceramic, glass or bronze are created, too. The art of Otmar Alt reaches far into all aspects of daily life for he also creates books for children, posters, walls and claddings or water-fountains.

Born in 1940 in Werningerode at the Harz, he soon moved with his family to Berlin. Alt studied from 1960 to 1966 as master student of Hermann Bachmann at the "Hochschule der Künste" at Berlin. At the end of the 60s the artist became stage designer at Trier and later even at the legendary "Theater am Turm" (Fassbinder, Peymann) at Frankfurt. Even today he works for the theatre, designs equipment, stage settings and costumes. In 1978 the cooperation with the Rosenthal AG started.

Otmar Alt not only emphasises the aspect of the impression of his art, but also underlines the special responsibility of the artist toward society. Otmar Alt was never satisfied with his success. He felt called upon to make a vast public interested in art. First of all, however, he saw it an important task to support the artists of the next generations. The artist fulfilled his dream with the founding of the "Otmar Alt Stiftung". The scholarship holders find ideal working conditions with ateliers and habitation rooms at an estate from the 17th century, which has been restored and enlarged. The house is located in the middle of a foundation area of 10.000 sqm at Hamm-Norddinker where Omar Alt lives and works.
