WALTER WOMACKA - Paintings
till August 20th, 2008

Walter Womacka was born 1925 in Bohemia, lives and works in Berlin and Usedom.

Walter Womacka began his career in the craft professions: Firstly, he was trained as ceramicist and formative craftsman, later he studied at the art schools in Weimar and Dresden. In 1965 he received a professorship at the legendary art school in Berlin-Weißensee, which he directed from 1968 to 1988.

His painting is miscellaneous: Till this day he adopts every fascinating art style like the styles from Dalí, Picasso or Pop Art. Yet he remains at his point of origin: "Allgemein verständlich zu sein und trotzdem gut, das ist ja eine schwierige Sache. Das war immer mein Ziel und daran arbeite ich noch heute." ("To be universally comprehensible and yet well is a difficult thing. That was always my goal and till this day I stick to work on it.)

The paintings from Walter Womacka seem to be familiar from the first moment. This may be due to the motives and themes: People, their longing for bonds, social changes and nature over and over. Flowers and landscapes recur in Womacka's work. The motives can be found at his second homeland, the isle of Usedom, on which Walter Womacka lives and works for many years. The houses and fishing boats, the trees and the variegation of backwater appears in Womacka's paintings over and over again.

Beside oil paintings, water colour and prints, his Oevre includes also architectonical artwork. His frieze at the Berlin "House of the Teacher" is protected as historical monument. The fountain at the Alexanderplatz recedes also to his draft. The art market remains strongly interested, but in the meantime also young artist consider the art from Walter Womacka in their own work. In recent decades he was one of the most important representatives of an artistic convincing socialistic realism. His paintings announce the longing for a peaceful life, for luck and harmony.
